Residents and visitors to the city alike should be delighted as Picnics in the Park (PiP) has taken on the challenge of making our public spaces work for us for family events. Lay out your blanket, unroll your butcher paper, unwrap your spread and enjoy a Picnic in the Park!
The "Picnics in the Park" Series is a compilation of twelve themed outdoor events, held annually, aimed at communities and families. Each event is designed to provide a multi-sensory day by utilising the five senses of sight, sound, taste, smell and touch, therefore delivering a more memorable and creative experience for event attendees.
"In a world full of distractions events need to be more creative in its approach and not stick with the status quo. Our senses are the cornerstone of our experiences and by producing events that incorporate sight, sound, smell, taste and touch effectively, the messages conveyed to attendees will be much more memorable and impactful." There has been a lot said about Indaba in media reports recently and on Thursday SA Tourism hosted a media briefing to deliver the message that they are working to improve the quality of buyers attending the show and have increased the ratio of buyers to exhibitors for this year.
Acting CEO, Sthembiso Dlamini, said that, to date, 22 days ahead of the show, there were over 791 registered exhibitors, with 1 111 buyers registered to attend, including over 500 international buyers. Of these international buyers, 300 are international buyers hosted by SA Tourism. SA Tourism has increased the number of hosted buyers – from roughly 230 in 2013. At the same time, exhibitor numbers are down, with the show having at one stage attracted roughly 1 000 exhibitors but this could be a matter of quality over quantity.
Dlamini said SA Tourism had worked with key associations in order to secure quality buyers. Moreover, she said this year's improved ratio of buyers to exhibitors is something exhibitors have asked for. She added that previously, there had been roughly 300 buyers to roughly 1 000 exhibitors. "In order to increase the number of quality international, regional and local buyers, we have sourced buyers from key markets such as the UK, USA, Germany, France, The Netherlands, India, Japan, China, Australia, Canada, Brazil, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa," said Dlamini.
Dlamini emphasised that SA Tourism was aware that it needed to make innovations to the show to stay relevant. She added that the Minister of Tourism had conducted a review of Indaba and of SA Tourism as an agency and that the reviews had raised the need for SA Tourism to engage with its stakeholders. She described the show as one of the top three trade shows internationally, adding that this was a position SA Tourism would work hard to retain.
SA Tourism reiterated that the show is not in decline, they are currently finalising the tender for the running of the show and one of the proposals is to merge Indaba with WTM which we think is a great idea!
Indaba runs from May 7-9 and takes place in Durban, KwaZulu Natal, at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre and Durban Exhibition Centre. Visit the TTA stand where 6 members will be selling the city!
