What to expect at Wonderboom National Airport

TTA Vice-Chairperson, Nico Rowan, recently used Tshwane's very own Wonderboom National Airport for a flight to Cape Town. He shares his views about the experience...

"This airport reflects the Tshwane lifestyle - convenient, friendly and comfortable are some of the first positive thoughts of many that sprang into my mind when I used the Wonderboom Airport to fly to Cape Town for the first time recently. The airport was easily accessible (I was travelling from Pretoria East) and ample covered parking was available right opposite the entrance of the terminal building for only R75 for three full days parking over the weekend - this was a nice surprise when I arrived back in Tshwane. Boarding and disembarking of the flight was quick and easy.

The SA Airlink Jet has only 16 or 17 rows that allows for quick food and beverage service. Due to the smaller amount of passengers the luggage took only few minutes to come through when I arrived at Cape Town & back in Tshwane. I was impressed when I saw the different flight options available to and from Cape Town and the price was incredibly reasonable. The airport has a visitor's center run by the city that is much better in my opinion than the ones available at OR Tambo & Lanseria.

The airport restaurant provides a large selection of food and beverages options and is of very good quality with friendly service. The restaurant also has an outside area that looks out onto the runway. I've travelled to Cape Town many times and this was by far the easiest, efficient and convenient experience I have had. I can only hope that more destinations become available soon as Wonderboom Airport is now officially my favorite airport to use when travelling to Cape Town!"

Great news for our city and well done to the City of Tshwane metro for making this tourist dream a reality!

Burgers Park Pretoria reveals their big unveil

Where it all began ...

It all began with two good friends, Mr AE Engling and Walter Schafers, who decided to become business partners in 1999.

Randburg Inn and Towers - Randburg Towers have 110 bedrooms, whilst its sister hotel Randburg Inn has 70 bedrooms. These Hotels are situated on one property in Randburg on the cnr of Main and Republic. They consist of 8 Conference venues with capacities anything from 10 up to as much as 350 pax. Randburg Towers and Inn is in very close proximity to Lanseria Airport, shopping centres like Bright Water Commons and very popular accommodation options for sporting groups as well as events taking place at the Coca Cola Dome.

The Burgers Park Hotel with 251 rooms and two conference rooms was purchased and opened its doors in November 1999. Many doubted if The Burgers Park Hotel would succeed however, in the early 2000s and years to come, the hotel grew in the CBD of Pretoria and formed invaluable friendships with Ambassadors, Ministers and Organisations like SALO and ACCORD. A major turning point was when the hotel hosted many African Peace Initiatives. If you walk around the hotel, you will notice many peace dove symbols with the inscriptions PEACE IN AFRICA and the AFRIKA HOUSE conference venue.

The symbols represent the involvement of Burgers Park Pretoria in many peace initiative's within the African continent, namely Burundi, the DRC, Sudan and the now known Republic of South Sudan. It was a great honour to play a small part in history. The hotel hosted and is still hosting many Presidents, Government departments, NGOs, the United Nations, Unicef, the World Health Organisation, and Unisa.

The new era

The new era started in 2010. Burgers Park Pretoria was blessed to host the International Police Co-Operation Centre (Interpol, SAPS for the Soccer World Cup which played a major role in ensuring the security of the World Cup). The same concept was transferred to the International Youth Festivals, which brought all Youth Leaders of the world to our shores. While these events were unfolding, both the Randburg Inn and Towers and Burgers Park Pretoria continued extensive renovations.

Vision: Respect, Harmony, Peace

Mission: Striving for Excellence in hospitality.

Initially the Randburg Inn and Towers and Burgers Park Hotel were run independently. However after the sad passing of the founding directors, the grandsons of Mr AE Engling and Mr Ernest Walter Schafers, took over the operations respectively. Over the recent years the new directors shared information and ideas regarding hospitality and formed a strong and mutual working relationship. At the beginning of 2015 it was decided a formal group was overdue and therefore the New Hotel Group was launched: Sierra Burgers Park Pretoria, Sierra on Main and Sierra on Square.
