National Heritage Monument unveiled in Groenkloof Nature Reserve

Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa has unveiled 55 statues of pre-colonial and anti-apartheid struggle heroes, which are part of the National Heritage Monument in Groenkloof Nature Reserve.

Some icons featured in this first phase of the monument include Nelson Mandela, Walter and Albertina Sisulu, Anton Muziwakhe Lembede, Yusuf Dadoo, Charlotte Maxeke, and Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje.

According to Mthethwa the monument will ultimately feature over 500 bronze statues and will "become a major tourist attraction, as well as a massive educational centre that any person anywhere in the world would go to when they want to know about South African history".

The project was first conceptualised in 2010 by Dali Tambo, the CEO of the National Heritage Project Company and is said to ultimately include the monument itself, a visitors' centre, and the roads and infrastructure complementing the monument. Once the project is completed, the monument will reportedly be known as "The Long Walk to Freedom".

Airbnb, Uber to present at eTAS

Airbnb and Uber are two of the new companies that will be presenting at the e-Tourism Africa Summit 2015 (eTAS) in Tshwane on September 21-22.

Damian Cook, CEO of e-Tourism Frontiers, the organisers of the e-Tourism Africa Summits, said the rise of travel-sharing companies couldn't be ignored. "Around the world, Airbnb and Uber have gained new ground and significantly shaken up the market. There have been moves by some governments and destinations to try and curb – and even stop – travel sharing companies growing or operating, however it is completely clear that there is a huge demand for travel-sharing services across the world."

Airbnb plans to significantly grow its business in Africa where the company has already seen some impressive growth. In 2015, the number of listings in Africa has more than doubled and the number of people staying in Airbnb listings in the region has increased by 145%. These figures were revealed in a press release issued by Airbnb recently when its CEO, Brian Chesky, attended the Global Entrepreneurial Summit in Nairobi in July.

Other global presenters at this year's summit include Facebook, TripAdvisor, Expedia, Twitter and Instagram. South African Tourism is the title sponsor of the summit, while Visa and the City of Tshwane are lead sponsors.
