City guest house upgraded to 5 star hotel

The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGSA) has awarded TTA member, the Menlyn Boutique Hotel, five-star hotel status, upgrading it from its previous five-star guest house status.

As guest houses are regarded as smaller establishments, with limited services and personnel, there were a number of areas where significant changes needed to be implemented. These took place a year prior to the transition.

"We changed our organogram, and created new positions to meet the criteria of a hotel. We also reviewed our brand image and improved the services and amenities available to our guests," says Paul Duverge, General Manager of The Menlyn Boutique Hotel.

He adds that every facet of The Menlyn Boutique Hotel was scored, from the maintenance of the property, to the service standards across all departments. "Preparing for grading does not happen overnight."

In order to be deemed a hotel, a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week service needed to be provided. "Our guests now have the convenience of checking in and out of the hotel at any time," says Duverge. The TTA is proud to congratulate Menlyn Boutique Hotel on this achievement and very pleased that the number of 5 star accommodation properties in the city is on the increase!

Lorraine Jenks from Hotel Stuff | Green Stuff was the second speaker and Lorraine gave an informative presentation on the scale of being "green" and she showed us you how we should aspire to even greater eco-conscious practices with tips for the hospitality industry.

Ashton Bodrick, Marketing Manager for Gautrain also addressed the meeting about bulk discounts on Gautrain rates for group organisers and he distributed boxes of the new Gautrain tourism map to product owners to display in their premises.
