City of Tshwane statement on load shedding

The City of Tshwane appreciates the frustration residents have with load shedding and the negative affect it has on households and businesses. We are trying our best to accommodate and balance the load reduction requirements from Eskom and to maintain an economical viable city. We therefore request your patience and support while we seek a solution that will not be detrimental to the city's power grid.

The City of Tshwane has refined its load shedding schedule with a view to implement a schedule that rotates on a weekly basis. This schedule will be implemented from next week but residents should please note that this is an interim measure.

Eskom indicated that it is planning changes to the current load shedding programme. These changes include the standardisation of schedules countrywide and to introduce new stages and load shedding times. The new requirements will have to be incorporated in a new schedule for Tshwane.

Wonderboom Airport to have commercial flights

Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa has announced that three scheduled commercial flights will fly daily from Wonderboom National Airport to Cape Town International from August 2015. South African Airways (SAA) and SA Airlink will be the airlines available for flights.

Extract from the State of the Captial address:

"Progress has been made with the introduction of scheduled flights at Wonderboom Airport and we will commence services from July 2015. In this regard, we are proud to welcome South African Airways and Airlink, who have entered into a commercial joint venture for the purpose of providing new scheduled air services at the airport. These services will commence during August 2015 and will operate initially between Wonderboom and Cape Town, with three flights scheduled per day.

As pronounced within last year's address, the process to involve the private sector in the development and management of the airport is progressing. The transactional advisory team appointed to assist the City with realising a maximum return on this lucrative asset has completed much of the preliminary work, and will be ready to communicate the way forward in due course."

Mobile bookings for B&Bs

Vodacom Business has launched a tool which enables the booking of smaller bed and breakfasts and boutique hotels from mobile phones. The Vodacom Hospitality Solution was created in partnership with NightsBridge and offers small to medium-sized accommodation providers exposure across travel websites, as well as access to real-time booking management.

"We conducted some research and noticed that bookings are declining in the B&B and small boutique hotel segments due to the lack of ICT services which these properties often don't have," Anthon Muller, executive head of managed enterprise mobility at Vodacom Business told eTNW. "This solution provides them with access to software where they can manage their availability and bookings and then publish the link across relevant travel websites such as Expedia and, therefore immediately allowing them to put to their beds onto the world wide web."

Thereafter, travel bookers and consumers can immediately book with these properties. "Independent B&Bs, guesthouses and other accommodation properties face the challenge of coming to the attention of corporate bookers, agents and tour operators, [all while] struggling to update their availability across a range on online accommodation booking sites," said Theresa Griessel-Emerick, md of NightsBridge. "This tool solves that problem, enabling properties to manage their bookings in a mobile environment."
