International meetings mean international business visitors and more spin-off leisure tourism and economic growth and Tshwane definitely has a lot of growth potential in this market.
South Africa has secured 88 international association meetings over the next five years to 2017, according to a report to Parliament on Tuesday by the National Convention Bureau. South Africa is still ranked the top association congress destination in Africa and the Middle East. It hosted 106 international conferences in 2012 with an economic value of R662m, attended by 52 587 delegates over 414 days.
South Africa hosted more than a third of all association meetings that took place in Africa in 2012. Cape Town was the top-ranking city in Africa, followed by Johannesburg at third place, Durban fourth, Stellenbosch seventh and Pretoria ninth.
Worldwide Tshwane's ICCA (International Congress & Convention Association) ranking is as follows for the past three years:
||Number of international meetings
||Tshwane worldwide city ranking
"Tshwane venues and conference organisers can improve the city's ranking by reporting all international meetings to ICCA to be included in the ICCA database", says Bronwen Cadle de Ponte, TTA Chairperson. "According to ICCA the average number of delegates for an international association meeting is just over 500 and 73% of all international association meetings have between 50 and 499 delegates. Tshwane has over 100 conference venues which can cater for conference groups of this size so there is absolutely no reason why our city should not increase its share of the international association meetings market with existing venues in the short to medium term", said Mrs Cadle de Ponte, "The ICCA database contains over 4500 international association meetings with the potential to come to Tshwane, this is a huge pool to work with".
The international conferences which took place in Pretoria/Tshwane in 2012, which were included in the ICCA database from which the above statistics are drawn, were:
- 17th International Conference of the African Association for Lexicography (AFRILEX 2012), 3 & 4 July 2012, University of Pretoria
- 30th International Congress on High Speed Imaging and Photonics (ICHSIP 2013), 16 - 21 September 2012, CSIR International Convention Centre
- 12th European Conference of the International Society for Terrain Vehicle Systems, 24 - 27 September 2012, Gerotek Test Facilities
- 4th Conference of the African Network for Internationalization of Education (ANIE 2012), 26 - 28 September 2012, University of Pretoria
- 15th International Business Forum (IBF) Congress, 21 - 23 October 2012, CSIR International Convention Centre
- Congress of the International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF), 28 October - 3 November 2012, Roodevallei Country Lodge
