Opportunity to exhibit at Indaba & Meetings Africa 2013

As you may know, booking for exhibiting at Both Indaba and Meetings Africa is open and Tshwane Tourism Association will like to give you an opportunity to exhibit there at a minimum fee.

We are in the process of coordinating a stand for interested members at the Meetings Africa 2013 and Indaba 2013 exhibition. Confirmation will be done upon receipt of sufficient interest from members. TOMSA LTA Initiative

TOMSA has teamed up with the Tshwane Tourism Association to help with the Levy Collection.

TOMSA is a private sector initiative that aims to raise additional funds to support South African Tourism's (SA Tourism) local and international marketing activities.

Tourism Grading Council new tariffs

The Tourism Grading Council has launched the new tariffs which are effective from
1 October 2012.

Grading criteria review kicks off

The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) has begun the review of its grading criteria, which have been sent to all the relevant associations for feedback.

The review, which is scheduled to take place every three years, is being conducted via a web-based questionnaire. Associations currently providing feedback include the TBCSA, FEDHASA, NAA-SA, QUADPara, VOASA, SAGAA, BSA and SAACI. The deadline for association comment is Monday, October 8.

In the next phase of the review, the online survey will be made available to the public for comment. The reviewed criteria will be introduced from April 1, 2013. Source:

Registration for ETEYA awards opens

Entries for the 2013 edition of the Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year Award opened on 3 October 2012, and close on 31 October 2012.

SAT is proud to work with its partners to provide a platform to develop emerging businesses and provide entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge to further advance themselves and empower others - Thulani Nzima, SAT CEO.

The call for entries for the 2013 Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year Award (ETEYA) competition was made at The Orchards Executive Accommodation and Conference Centre in Midrand. The venue is owned by ETEYA 2011 Gauteng provincial winner, Salome Tshungu.

ETEYA recognises and honours the country's most promising and innovative emerging tourism business owners.

Some innovative new developments were announced at the ETEYA 2013 launch. Elements of the competition have been reviewed to increase the competition's relevance and usefulness to emerging tourism entrepreneurs.

A major innovation this year is that the competition's 27 semi-finalists (3 will be selected from each province) will have their businesses thoroughly analysed by business professionals.

Thereafter they will receive a personalised 5-month mentorship programme from the Tourism Enterprise Partnership (TEP). They will be matched with mentors who will help them create growth development plans for their businesses.

The 9 provincial ETEYA winners' and national finalists' cash grant awards will be used to finance the business development plans that they will have submitted to the judges.

Another innovation is the launch of the ETEYA Knowledge Centre, an online digital platform that all ETEYA entrants will have access to. The ETEYA Knowledge Centre will enable entrants to network with each other online and share their business success tips.

It will also connect entrants with mentors and their peers in the industry. These will include some of the country's leading industry professionals, who will provide cutting-edge industry information, business tips and insights.

Thulani Nzima, South African Tourism (SAT) CEO, said SAT was proud to work with its partners to provide a platform to develop emerging businesses and provide entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge to further advance themselves and empower others.

'ETEYA is not only about identifying the best emerging entrepreneurs in the industry, but also about publicly acknowledging businesses that excel at providing customer service to our tourists,' he said.

Dr Salifou Siddo, TEP CEO, said TEP was proud to have been a partner in the roll-out of ETEYA over the past 12 years.

'TEP's various skills development courses and mentorship programmes have assisted ETEYA competitors' businesses to become operational and thereby contribute to job growth in South Africa. TEP has seen how the competition has encouraged innovation and elevated small business entrepreneurs to inspirational leaders,' he commented.

To qualify for this year's competition, entries should demonstrate innovation in how they operate. They must also communicate the extent to which their business plans meet consumer demand in a globally competitive industry. Entries should also address responsible and sustainable business practices and highlight how their businesses contribute to job creation.

Application forms can be downloaded from the ETEYA website or collected at regional tourism offices. Entries must be received by 17:00 on 31 October 2012. The provincial winners, who will be the competition's 9 finalists, will be announced at INDABA in May 2013. The overall ETEYA winners will announced at the National Tourism Awards in September 2013.

Fire & Ice set to open in Menlyn, Pretoria

Contractors have broken ground in Summit Place, opposite the Menlyn Park Mall, for the newest urban concept hotel brand in South Africa - Protea Hotel Fire & Ice.

Protea Hotel Fire & Ice Menlyn will open in the first quarter of 2014. The hotel is aimed at travellers who are young at heart and enjoy being amid the energetic urban vibe of city life.

Protea Hospitality Group chief executive officer Arthur Gillis made the announcement this week, saying the construction heralded a triumphant turning point in South African hospitality after the difficulties that had plagued the industry in recent years.

"We always knew the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice brand would grow and we were waiting for the perfect time and the perfect place.

"Now is the perfect time and there is no doubt that Menlyn is the perfect place," says Gillis. Summit Place is a new commercial precinct that is being developed opposite the popular Pretoria shopping mecca and the hotel will be the flagship property in the development.

Protea Hotel Fire & Ice Menlyn will open in the first quarter of 2014. The hotel is aimed at travellers who are young at heart and enjoy being amid the energetic urban vibe of city life. It will have a unique style, but still conform to the brand essence of Protea Hotel Fire & Ice being a space which is experiential, young thinking and edgy.

The hotel will have 178 rooms, a restaurant, a bar and lifestyle spaces, conference centre, swimming pool, and approximately 220 underground parking bays. It will boast 10 suites and 40 inter-leading rooms.

Exhibition: Art, Design, Photography, Jewellery at Alpine Attitude Boutique Hotel in Pretoria

A few artists collaborated to host a mixed medium art exhibition at the Alpine Attitude Boutique Hotel in Pretoria from the 13-14 October 2012.

Nadine Engelbrecht will be showing photography from their Nepal/Everest expedition. Audrey Anderson will exhibit a selection of her fine art pieces. The exhibition opens on Saturday 13 October at 3pm at Alpine Attitude Boutique Hotel (522 Atterbury Road, Menlo Park, Pretoria) till Sunday the 14th of October.
