TTA hosts first successful exhibition at Meetings Africa

TTA had its first stand at a successful Meetings Africa Exhibition that was held at Sandton Convention Centre (SCC) from 21 - 23 February 2011. Unaudited attendance numbers for Meetings Africa 2011 were 3 353, up from the 2 899 delegates who attended last year's show. SAT hosted 123 international buyers and 32 international media from global core markets and this year's Association Day was attended by 52 delegates. Over
7 000 official meetings were scheduled during the exhibition, breaking all previous records and exceeding the expectations of platform owners, SAT. In conjunction with SAACI, the 2011 exhibition also hosted educational seminars that were very popular with the Meetings Africa attendees. Day one saw attendees enlightened on how the Consumer Protection Act will affect business within the industry, while the topic of the second seminar created heightened awareness about the greening of the industry and how it can better apply and adhere to global greening trends.

Participating members ensured that the stand was professionally manned and had an excellent time building up good business contacts.

We would like to thank the following members to contributing their time and effort to preparing for the project:

  • Izelle Behr of Court Classique Hotel for the creative ideas and the hard work put into personally making and donating the specially beaded name badges to compliment the TTA logo.
  • Ulysses Tours & Transport for transporting the stand furniture to and from SCC.
  • Court Classique Hotel for donating the furniture on loan for the stand.
  • Vanessa our TTA secretary for taking care of all the admin and ensuring all participating members were well looked after.
  • Srinivas Venkatkumar, Arcadia Hotel GM, for ensuring that all supplier invoices were paid timeously (and at short notice!).

The association is considering doing similar sharing stands for other trade exhibitions such as Indaba, please contact Vanessa on if you would be interested in participating in the future.

The Sports & Events Tourism Exchange Conference

The first of its kind to be held in South Africa, the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange will take place in Cape Town from the 27th - 29th July 2011. This "confex" will focus on the world class standard of facilities and services that South Africa has to offer as a host, for all top level international events and the exchange between sports tourism and the events industry. It will also provide a prestigious platform for the marketing of the many products and services related to this niche market, both on a local and international front.

South African Tourism has identified the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange as its annual sports and events tourism platform. They have endorsed the event and will be actively involved in marketing the project internationally.

A comprehensive and informative Sports and Events Tourism Academic Conference will take place alongside the exhibition. The conference will facilitate high level networking and incisive debate, covering topics such as;

  • new ways to design and implement leading sponsorship campaigns,
  • bidding for and hosting major international sports events,
  • promotion of home grown sports events,
  • Promotion of the provinces and the facilities and services they have to offer.

Theta supports small levy paying enterprises

Many organisations are paying levies but either not submitting a Workplace Skills Plan (WSP), or have had problems with interpreting the requirements and are therefore not benefiting from the payment of their skills development levies.

Theta - the Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Education & Training Authority - is committed to supporting all levy paying enterprises in their sector (Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Education) and to inform them about training opportunities available to them.

The aim of the support is to ensure the participation of all levy paying enterprises in skills development initiatives in the sector. It is against the above background that Theta is hosting workshops for its constituencies around the country.

The purpose of the workshop is to advise small levy paying enterprises on how to submit the WSP & Annual Training Report (ATR), as well as how to access discretionary funding for their enterprises.

Hotel Investment Conference Africa announced

A special Hotel Investment Conference Africa (HICA) with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa will be held in KwaZulu-Natal on 5 and 6 May 2011, preceding the annual tourism Indaba in Durban.

Convened by the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) for the past five years, HICA is an established business platform for investors and developers in the African hotel sector and attracts financiers, entrepreneurs and government leaders. Visit for more information.

New Design in Hospitality confex puts experience-driven hospitality in the spotlight

15 - 16 September 2011, The Forum, Turbine Hall, Newtown, Johannesburg

Thebe Exhibitions & Projects Group announced the launch of Design in Hospitality (DiH), the first confex of its kind to be held in South Africa. The inaugural two-day event will take place on 15 and 16 September at The Forum, Turbine Hall, Newtown, Joburg.

Incorporating a high-level conference and a design-led exhibition Design in Hospitality focuses exclusively on the hotel and hospitality industry. Set to become the must-attend event for the hospitality and design world, it will give designers and other decision makers the opportunity to grow their understanding of industry trends and to connect with their peers.

"From check-in to sleeping to bathing to eating - modern hospitality concepts need to excite, seduce and sell, and do so by balancing aesthetics with the financial," says Cairey Slater, general manager for the project.
